You can go to one of the many web sites devoted to teaching through video lessons. These employ a subscription model. They work as long as you are motivated and keep using them. But so many people begin to fall off use, but still pay the subscription every month, wasting money.

You can even use Youtube (which I do NOT recommend, because you won’t know if the teacher is any good).

But there is a downside to online learning. That downside is the “hands on” advantage in person lessons give you. Instant feedback on correcting technique that video lessons just cannot give you – otherwise each lesson would be three hours long, addressing every question and painstakingly walking you through correct technique to ensure you get it right.

    Who has three hours?

Granted, in person lessons are more expensive. But you are paying for expertise and clear instruction, correction of bad habits and technique and so many other things you will never get with online video lessons.

You can do weekly, the most expensive. Or you can do bi-weekly, which helps offset the cost.

However, if you must do online video lessons, do the research and make sure you are going with the best fit for you. Many subscription sites give you free trial for 30–90 days. This is a good way to test it all out.

I have purposely avoided pointing you to any sites, because I do not endorse one site above another. I will not enter bias into your evaluation of sites and how they may work for you.

ADDENDUM: Taking lessons via Skype, is the next best thing to in person. With decent camera, the teacher can see what you’re doing and make corrective suggestions if required. It sucks you cannot play together due to latency, but that is a minor issue with solutions to overcome the problem.

I teach via Skype and have no problem communicating everything as I do with in person lessons. You’ll probably still pay the same rate as face to face, but it is worth it because you’re getting the instant feedback you need to correct bad technique.

And one cool thing with Skype…you can record video to see how it should be done. The student can record you and now have a “demostration video” to reference…with description and everything.
